The region of Le Boulonnais, situated in Le Parc naturel régional des caps et marais d'Opale, hosts an ancient cultural landscape called the Bocage. It is a terrain of mixed woodland and pastures. This landscape heritage is disappearing due to changes in the scale of agricultural industries. Century-old hedges are dying due to a lack of maintenance. Le Parc naturel régional des caps et marais d'Opale is currently working on the restoration of those hedges, but not enough farmers are enthusiastic about joining the initiative.
process
We developed wooden panels using the bocage chips that result from maintaining those hedges. By mixing those chips with casein glue based on milk, we use all the resources of the Bocage landscape to make maintaining the hedges profitable, thus encouraging farmers to participate in the initiative. The region doesn’t only offer materials, but also traditional woodworking techniques. Les Faiseurs des Bateaux, an atelier of traditional boat makers, showed how wood can be treated and made impermeable using only natural and local resources.
