Master Studio
To begin their material research of the Nord-Pas-De-Calais region of Northern France, the Master of Architecture students visited an old barn in Saint-Martin-Choquel, where they had an introduction to the region, its resources and traditional building techniques. They participated in a workshop experimenting with earth and clay found in a field adjacent to the barn. Through carrying out several testing methods — the hand-washing, the bottle, and the falling tests — the students investigated the properties of the clay and what can be done with it. In smaller groups, they explored making building elements, such as blocks and plasters.
