Lime – Mussel plaster

Verb: To capture / Material: Lime - Mussel plasterThis folly was conceived to deepen the sense of stillness and peace that emerges when approaching the barn. Before entering, visitors pass through this transitional space, allowing their senses to settle. I created a listening mechanism that amplifies the subtle sounds of the surrounding poplar trees, rustling leaves, shifting wind, and the quiet presence of nature. The form draws on archaic acoustic shapes known for intensifying sound: a dome, a horn, and a concave reclining surface. Their geometry gathers, guides, and focuses natural sounds so they can be perceived with greater clarity. Material choices support this acoustic intention. Lime plaster mixed with crushed shells is left rough on areas where sound should scatter, while inside the horn and the reclining shape it is sanded smooth so sound can glide across the surface. Light and shadow interact with these forms, reinforcing the contemplative atmosphere.
