Compressed Earth Block

Verb: To settle in work / Material: Compressed Earth BlockThis project explores how a rural barn can support forms of slow, settled work through the thickening of its walls. Drawing on Christopher Alexander’s notion of settled work, the proposal considers everyday, repetitive acts of making, repairing, storing, and caring. A 1.2 meter-thick wall of compressed earth blocks is introduced as a continuous, inhabitable edge, carved to form niches, ledges, and pockets that support utilitarian yet intimate activities. Rather than dividing the barn into rooms, the intervention preserves its openness while giving depth, material presence, and spatial support to work that occurs quietly within the agricultural landscape.
