The climate in Brussels during the school year is characterized by a high number of rainy days, occasionally interrupted by periods of sunshine. Because of these changing weather conditions, the project does not only address the need for shade, but also considers protection from rain. Creating a sheltered space therefore becomes an important aspect of the design, allowing the entrance area to remain usable under different weather conditions throughout the year. In addition to climatic protection, the project also reflects on the visual comfort of the space. We used the heat-resistant material from a decommissioned hot-air balloon to create an immersive experience on the terrace, both within the installation and alongside it. During the day, the design extends into the buildings, and in the evening, it blends with the surrounding walls thanks to the shifting light source. The modular design can be adapted by anyone, to suit the needs of the moment. It can also be easily stored away, after which the design leaves a lasting visual impression on the facade. The core idea revolves around a protective envelope that can create experiences both beneath and alongside it.
